Dr. Sonia Fernandes

Dr. Sonia Fernandes is the acting Assistant Director of Quality and Performance at the Hamad International Training Center (HITC) as well as its CPD lead, responsible for the educational governance and monitoring of all HITC programs. Having started her career as a medical doctor trained in Emergency medicine, she joined HITC in 2014 as part of the then newly launched Resuscitation service to follow her passion for interprofessional learner-centered education and transformational leadership within healthcare systems. 

She then took on the role of Training Center Educator before assuming her current role. She has a MSc. in Leadership in Health Professions Education (M.Sc. LHPE) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) with 1st Class Honors.

She currently leads the HITC Educational Rounds and the Generic Teaching Course, both program designed to ensure the continuous professional development of its instructors, course directors, curriculum developers, educators and program leads and to maintain a learning culture that encourages reflective discussion and promotes group learning.

First established in 2000, HITC is dedicated to excellence in healthcare education, encompassing basic and advanced levels of professional medical and public training programs to all HMC staff as well as those in the private and public healthcare sectors in the State of Qatar. Its focuses its governance on three pillars: Organization, Patients and Learners.It is committed to equipping healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver exceptional patient care thereby supporting HMC’s organisational mission and the Qatar National Health Strategy.
