Prof. Dr. med. Dr. habil. Thomas Carus, FACS

Professor Thomas Carus is an accomplished general, visceral, and vascular surgeon with additional expertise in special visceral surgery, bariatric surgery, proctology, sports and emergency medicine, palliative medicine, and health economics. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to minimally invasive and robotic surgery as well as for his leadership in surgical education.

Professor Carus completed his medical studies at the University of Düsseldorf between 1982 and 1988, followed by his early surgical training as a medical assistant in the Departments of General, Vascular, and Trauma Surgery in Diepholz and Düsseldorf from 1988 to 1994. His rapid progression in the field was marked by certification as a Specialist in Surgery in 1995, in Visceral Surgery in 1999, and in Vascular Surgery in 2001.

From 1994 to 2001, he served as Senior Consultant in Oldenburg and Neuss. Between 2001 and 2022, he held Chief Physician appointments at several major hospitals in Germany, including Mönchengladbach, Cuxhaven, Bremen, and Hamburg, where he oversaw advanced programs in general, visceral, and vascular surgery. In recognition of his academic achievements, he was appointed Professor of Minimally Invasive Surgery in 2011. Since 2023, he has served as Chief Physician of the Department of General, Visceral, and Vascular Surgery at Klinik Bassum – Kliniken Landkreis Diepholz, where he also leads the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Hernia Center, and the Bariatric Center, in addition to serving as 2nd Medical Director.

Professor Carus is the author of several surgical textbooks, including the Atlas of Laparoscopic Surgery (Springer, 4th edition, 2025), and has delivered more than 250 scientific presentations worldwide. His commitment to advancing surgical innovation is further reflected in his role as a trainer in robotic surgery with the Da Vinci Intuitive system.

He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the German Society of Surgery, the German Society for Visceral Surgery, the German Society for Vascular Surgery, the Professional Association of German Surgeons, and several specialized surgical working groups. His international affiliations include the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), the German Society for Bariatric Surgery, the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), the International Endohernia Association, and the American Hernia Association (AHA).

Through his distinguished career, Professor Carus has combined clinical excellence, academic leadership, and innovative research, making him a prominent voice in the field of minimally invasive, bariatric, and emergency surgery.
