Dr. Ahmad Abutaka is an Acute Care Surgeon at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. His clinical and academic focus is on Emergency General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, with expertise in the management of cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, small bowel obstruction, pancreatitis and pancreatic necrosis, and abdominal wall hernias, utilizing both open and minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic approaches. He is also actively engaged in developing clinical pathways and quality improvement initiatives.

Dr. Abutaka obtained his MBBS from the Jordan University of Science and Technology, followed by advanced training in General Surgery, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar and the University of Minnesota, USA. He has been recognized with several awards, including the Earl Young MD Award for Exemplary Performance as a Surgical Resident (2023), the Cassius Ellis Resident Teaching Award, University of Minnesota (2024), and the Teacher of the Year Award, Mayo Clinic General Surgery Program (2025).

In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Abutaka serves on multiple institutional and national committees, including the Emergency General Surgery Committee of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST).
