Dr. Mayur Narayan is Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery, and Trauma Medical Director at Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he also serves as Director of the Acute Care Surgery Fellowship, Director of Project AiCCESS (Artificial Intelligence for Comprehensive Care, Equity and Sustainability in Surgery), and Executive Director of the Rutgers Acute Care Surgery Research Lab (RASR).

Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. Narayan held leadership and faculty positions at Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian, UT Southwestern Medical Center, and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland, where he founded and directed the Center for Injury Prevention & Policy. He has trained generations of surgeons through his roles as Fellowship Director, Residency Program Director, and as a national leader in surgical education.

Dr. Narayan’s academic background is extensive. He earned his BS in Biology from Old Dominion University and his MD from Eastern Virginia Medical School in a competitive joint BS/MD program, followed by residency in General Surgery at EVMS. He completed fellowships in Surgical Critical Care and Traumatology at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, while simultaneously completing a Master of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration at Johns Hopkins University. He later pursued a Master of Health Professions Education at Harvard University and the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

An internationally recognized expert in trauma care, surgical education, and injury prevention, Dr. Narayan has been invited to lecture worldwide and holds visiting faculty appointments at leading institutions in India and Singapore. He is widely honored for his contributions to medical education and humanism in medicine, including the Gold Humanism Award (2011), the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s national “Gold Doctor” Award (2012), and the Golden Apple Teaching Award from the American Medical Student Association (2012, 2013). In 2018, he was among the inaugural 91 surgeons inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, becoming a full member in 2023. In 2025, he was named Global Educator of the Year for ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), the flagship ACS Committee on Trauma course delivered worldwide.

Dr. Narayan has authored 69 peer-reviewed publications, 15 textbook chapters, and delivered over 300 presentations. He has been a principal investigator on several funded projects, including a U.S. Air Force grant for hemorrhage control and a Pfizer Global Grant for antibiotic stewardship in India. He serves as editor of the 4th edition of the Trauma Evaluation and Management (TEAM) course and holds editorial roles across major surgical education and critical care resources.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the International College of Surgeons, and multiple international bodies, Dr. Narayan is deeply engaged in advancing global surgical education. He currently serves on the ACS Committee on Trauma, the American Board of Surgery as an Oral Board Examiner, and the Senior Educatory Advisory Board of the ACS. His leadership across multiple surgical societies reflects his lifelong dedication to improving trauma systems, advancing surgical training, and ensuring equity in global surgical care.​
