Dr. John W. Scott, PhD, MD
Sr. Consultant
Dr. Scott graduated from medical school at the Univ of L’Aquila, in Italy and did his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Oregon School of Medicine in Portland, OR and a fellowship in Clinical Microbiology at Univ of Washington in Seattle. After medical school, he did residency in Internal Medicine at St. Josephs Hospital in Patterson NJ and a fellowship Rheumatology at University of Oregon School of Medicine. It was also at this time that he began developing a special interest in medical informatics.
Dr. Scott's academic career started in 1995 when he established the section of Rheumatology at Tulane University Medical School and opened clinics in both Tulane University Hospital and the Veterans Hospital. Due to the number of patients with severe collagen vascular autoimmune diseases, he opened a specialized clinic (RheumOnc) where he developed specialized protocols with high dose cyclophosphamide and stem cell transplantation treatments for patients with refractory severe collagen vascular diseases. Concurrent with these efforts, he established the Office of Information Technology and served as the Associate Dean for Medical Informatics. This Office provided support services for the faculty, staff and students and was responsible for developing innovative products.
After Hurricane Katrina, there was a period of reorganization and retraining and he rejoined Tulane in the department of Clinical Pathology as the Director for Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Chemistry and LIS and Associate Director of the Blood Bank and Apheresis. Later, with the departmental reorganization, he became the Director of the Clinical Laboratory. At this time, he also continued his interest in the design and development of Web-based education using artificial intelligence."
