Professor Antonio Ascione
Professor Ascione is a Senior Consultant Hepatologist, Department of Internal Medicine, Center for Liver Disease, at Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Napoli and Director Emeritus at Cardarelli Hospital, Napoli, Italy. Previously he was the Director of the Department of Gastroenterology and Director of Liver Unit at Cardarelli Hospital in Naples from 1990 until June 2008.
He is a member of International Association for the study of the Liver (IASL) and of European Association for the study of the Liver (EASL), executive president of EASL Annual Meeting (1999). member of International Society of Liver Transplantation (ILTS), member of Associazione Italiana Studio Fegato (AISF) (Secretary 1983 – 85), and member of many AISF Committees dealing with guidelines/position papers/educational documents.
Professor Ascione is currently the Vice President (Deputy President) of Scuola Medica Ospedaliera Napoletana (SMON) and the President of the Mediterranean Association for Study of Liver (MASL) and has been invited to give lectures in Italy and abroad (Spain, Portugal, Belgium, United States, Switzerland, South Africa, Hawaii, Norway, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, England, Romania, Russia, Japan, Big Island, Qatar, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Palestine, and Brazil). He has organized meetings and post graduate courses on liver disease since 1975. He has received the Distinguished Service Award for 2010 from the Italian Association for Study of Liver (AISF).
He has been the author of a number of chapters in textbooks in Hepatology and Pathology and the Editor of the textbook: “Hepatology at Bedside”, 2003. He has also been an Editor of “Il Fegato”; Associate Editor of “Italian Journal of Gastroenterology”; Editorial Committee of “Italian Journal of Gastroenterology”; Editorial staff of “Gastroenterology International”; Editor of “Gastroenterology International” and member of the editorial board of World Journal of Hepatology.
He is a referee for the following Journals: The Lancet, Hepatology, Digestive and Liver disease, European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, World Journal of Gastroenterology, World Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Viral Hepatitis, American Journal of Nutrition, Hepatology International, The Annals of Gastroenterology & Hepatology; World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics; International Journal of Infectious Diseases.
Professor Ascione has published 150 papers in international journals and his areas of research include the epidemiology and prognosis of chronic liver diseases, quantitative liver function tests, natural history and therapy of chronic viral hepatitis B, C and Delta, nutritional status of cirrhotic, treatment of ascites, epidemiology and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, treatment of HCV reinfection after liver transplantation, and treatment of acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure.
