Professor Abdul-Badi Abou-Samra
Prof. Abou-Samra is an academic MD/PhD physician scientist with an MD from Aleppo-Syria in 1979, a PhD in biochemistry from Lyon, France in 1983, and certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Prior to coming to Qatar, Prof. Abou-Samra worked at several international institutions, including Lyon I University, France for five years, the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland for two years, Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital for 21 years, and the Wayne State University School of Medicine for five years. He was Professor of Medicine, Professor of Physiology, Professor of Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases and Director of the Clinical Fellowship program in endocrinology and diabetes and the endocrine research training program.
Prof. Abou-Samra has received multiple recognitions for his scientific contributions and led several research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health. He is known for his molecular and clinical research on G protein-coupled receptors, insulin action and nutritionally-regulated genes. Prof. Abou-Samra has published over 140 original papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to five USA patents. He was member of NIH study section and member of editorial board for several international journals.
In January 2013 Prof. Abou-Samra joined Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar, as the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Weil Cornell Medical College - Qatar. Prof. Abou-Samra is Co-Chair for the Qatar National Diabetes Committee with the mandate of developing a national strategy for diabetes in Qatar and Chairman for the Qatar Metabolic Institute.
