Undergraduate training leading to an honours degree in biochemistry at the University of Glasgow followed by a degree in medicine and a PhD in experimental pathology at the University of Birmingham (1965-1977). Appointed clinical lecturer in pathology at Welsh National School of Medicine, in 1977, progressing to a clinical senior lectureship in 1982. Acquired MRCPath in 1989 and a Specialist Consultant’s status in Histopathology (Immunohistochemistry) in 1993. Awarded a Personal Chair in Oncological Pathology (2003) followed by a Joint Headship of Histopathology and Academic Pathology Departments (2004-2011) and Associate Postgraduate Dean position for Academic Medicine Training in Wales (2011-2015) at Cardiff University. Subsequent to retirement, invited to be Chair of Biomedical Sciences at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. Astana, Kazakhstan, and adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, USA (2015-2016) followed by to the post of Director of Pathology at Targos Molecular Pathology Institute, Kassel, Germany. (2016-2022). Currently an Emeritus Professor in Cancer Pathology at Cardiff University, Chair of the Scientific Board, UKNEQAS for IHC and ISH, and member of Consortium for Analytic Standardization in Immunohistochemistry (CASI), Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Over 40 years of experience in research and diagnostic use and quality assurance of immunohistochemistry in cancer biomarking. Author of 2 books, and 300 peer-reviewed publications.
