Professor Omar Elahmer (Libya)

Dr. Omar Elahmer is Professor of Virology at the Faculty of Medical Technology, University of Tripoli. He received his PhD from Edinburgh University in Scotland, in 1997, where he studied 'Viral infection as a predisposing factor for bacterial colonization". Currently, he is the Director of Reference laboratory for Disease Control at the National Centre for Disease Control (CDC) of Libya and also designated as the National Focal Point of the International Health Regulation (IHR 2005) for Libya. His lab is recognized as a public health laboratory that meets the IHR core capacities requirements as well as a research center for infectious diseases. Dr. Elahmer is a WHO certified Laboratory Biorisk Management and Shipping of Infectious Substances for Influenza Laboratories, and a member of the Libyan Influenza Stakeholder Network, American Society of Microbiology (ASM), and European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has published several research papers in peer reviewed international journals.
