Hans-Christoph Pape, MD, FACS; FEBS, FAAOS
Professor and Chairman, Department of Trauma Surgery, University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland

Professor Hans-Christoph Pape is the Chairman of the Department of Trauma Surgery, University Hospital Zurich. His previous positions were Chairman, Professor of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery W. Pauwels, University of Aachen Medical Center, Germany (2005-2017), and Division Chief and Associate Professor of Traumatology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Pittsburgh, PA (2005-2009). He graduated from Hannover Medical School. 

He is the chair of the international relations committee OTA as well as the Swiss National Delegate of SICOT (International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology) and chair of the Polytrauma section and steering board of the European Society for Trauma & Emergency Surgery (ESTES). He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, of the European Board of Surgery and the American Association of Orthopaedic surgeons. 

He is a peer reviewer of several journals (Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Journal of Trauma, Infection and Critical Care, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American), Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British), Injury, Der Unfallchirurg, Der Chirurg).

Prof. Pape is author or co-author of more than 580 publications and peer-reviewed journals. 


He is also an editor of several books “The Poly-Traumatized Patient with Fractures”, Second Edition, Springer (Pape, Sanders, Borelli), Damage Control Management in the Polytrauma Patient, Springer, (Pape, Peitzman, Schwab, Giannoudis) TOP 20 in der Unfallchirurgie, Elsevier (Pape, Hildebrand)  Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, Cambridge (Pape, Giannoudis).

He has received more than 20 awards, among them of which are: 2020 AO Foundation Innovation Prize,  2018 Publication of the Year: World J. Surg, 2017 Dieffenbach-Büste (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie), Berlin, 2015 British Medical Society Award: best book  “Practical procedures in Ortho Trauma Surgery”, 2008 Kappa Delta Award, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons- Effects of changing strategies of fracture fixation on immunologic changes and systemic complications after multiple trauma, 2006 Swiss AO Foundation Annual Award, Berne, Switzerland- Early assessment of degree of hemorrhage in patients with blunt trauma, 2005 Novartis Prize.
