
Dr. Susu Zughaier (Qatar-QU)
Dr. Susu M. Zughaier, MSc, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. Trained as a clinical microbiologist, earned a Diploma in Clinical Microbiology, University College London in 1991; MSc in Medical Microbiology in 1994, and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Cardiff University, UK, in 1999.
She did her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, before joining Emory University in 2001.
Dr. Zughaier was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, USA, before joining Qatar University College of Medicine in the Fall of 2017.
Her research interests focused on inflammation, host-pathogen interactions, and vaccine development. She investigates antibiotic resistance mechanisms and implements nanotechnology to detect bacterial infections rapidly.
Her translational research focused on vitamin D immune modulatory effects, and she recently implemented artificial intelligence applications in medical research. To date, Dr. Zughaier published more than 70 scientific research papers and has been awarded two patents on her discoveries. She has been listed among the top two percent of highly cited authors with an impact in their field in the 2020 Stanford study.
Her Google Scholar H-index is 33. She is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and serves as the Scientific Microbiology Councilor for the International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society.
Dr. Zughaier also serves on the Women, Diversity, and Equity Committee of the International Society of Leukocyte Biology. She is an expert in Meningococcal and Gonococcal nano vaccines and therefore served as consulted for Pfizer and the World Health Organization (WHO).
In 2019 she joined Bacterial Vaccines Experts Network (BactiVac) at the University of Birmingham, UK. She serves as Guest Editor, editorial board member, and ad-hoc reviewer for multiple international journals.
