Dr. Mamunur Rahman Malik is a medical epidemiologist by training and has special interest in emerging infectious diseases, outbreak detection and response. He has over fifteen years’ work experience in infectious disease surveillance and response to outbreaks and other pandemic-prone diseases in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Dr. Malik has worked in Darfur in Sudan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, South Sudan and Afghanistan, setting up early warning systems for disease detection and response in the context of humanitarian and complex emergency situations. In his current role he is leading the epidemic readiness and response operations for WHO in the countries affected by complex emergencies in the region.

Dr. Malik works with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of WHO in Cairo, Egypt as a Regional Adviser for the Pandemic and Epidemic Disease Program, a position he has held since January 2014. He has also worked with the WHO Country Office in Sudan and with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of WHO as a Medical Officer for Communicable Disease Surveillance and Forecasting. His previous experience also includes working with WHO-Bangladesh. Dr. Malik is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Bangladesh.

As a member of the WHO steering group, Dr. Malik recently participated in the development of guidelines on meningitis outbreak response in sub-saharan Africa; hepatitis E outbreak response manual; and infection prevention and control guideline for the care of patients with CCHF.

Dr. Malik holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S.), a post-graduate Diploma in Health Economics and a Master’s Degree in Health Economics, all from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi national, Dr. Malik has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented scientific papers and abstracts at many international scientific meetings and conferences.
