Professor Marion Koopmans, DVM, PhD, is Head of Virology at the Laboratory for Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Public Health. In addition, she is a Professor of Public Health Virology at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her responsibilities include reference diagnostics, syndromic surveillance and emergency preparedness for viral diseases, including research aimed at improving the response capacity of a public health lab. Her research interest focus is enteric viruses, food-borne infections, emerging disease preparedness and infections at the human-animal interface, with a particular focus on unravelling mechanisms underlying possible emergence of new health threats and optimizing the early detection and response. She is Initiator and Coordinator of a network of laboratories with responsibility for norovirus surveillance that agreed to share data and sequences internationally. She has authored over 250 papers in peer reviewed journals.
