Sanjeev Sethi, MD, PhD

Dr. Sanjeev Sethi is a Professor at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He received his MBBS from Assam Medical College, India (1985), and completed his MD in Pathology at Sarojini Naidu Medical College (1989). He subsequently pursued graduate studies at Albany Medical College, New York, earning a PhD in Experimental Pathology (1991–1995). His doctoral research was recognized with the Dean’s Certificate and the Leonard Procita Award for Most Outstanding Research.

Dr. Sethi completed his pathology residency at Yale University (1995–1999), followed by a fellowship in Renal Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University (1999–2001).

His primary research interests include glomerulonephritis, with a strong emphasis on an etiologic approach to disease classification, the role of monoclonal gammopathy and complement in glomerular diseases, and the application of proteomics in renal pathology. Using proteomic approaches, his work has led to the identification of novel disease entities and pathogenic pathways, including new types of amyloidosis, previously unrecognized antigens in membranous nephropathy, and complement-mediated mechanisms in glomerular diseases.

These contributions have resulted in more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Sethi has also led international consensus efforts on the classification of glomerulonephritis, monoclonal immunoglobulin–associated kidney diseases, membranous nephropathy, and the standardization of kidney biopsy reporting and chronicity scoring.

A highly sought-after speaker, Dr. Sethi has delivered over 250 invited lectures nationally and internationally. In recognition of his contributions to renal pathology and clinical service, he received the Jacob Churg Award from the Renal Pathology Society (2020), the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician Award (2021), and the Pirani Lectureship at Columbia University (2022).
