Nursing Education Subspecialty Education Delivery & Clinical Integration
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from SickKids continued to deliver multiple pediatric nursing subspecialty and continuing education programs in 2013 and into 2014. The programs included one day workshops, or one and two-week curriculum courses in the following subspecialty areas: Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Surgery, Family Centered Care, Bronchiolitis, Asthma, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric Intravenous Therapy, Central Venous Access, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy and the Five Levels of Pediatric Triage. The programs focus on enhancing foundational nursing knowledge for nurses at HMC. In some courses, a number of lectures were co-facilitated by SMEs from other professions such as Respiratory Therapy or Occupational Therapy which assisted in role modeling inter-professional collaboration. The NICU course was co-facilitated by SickKids and the HMC Women’s Hospital CNS and Nurse Educator. Women’s Hospital Staff Nurses, Respiratory Therapists and Pharmacists also took part in the delivery of lectures. After nurses completed many of the SickKids programs, SMEs provided clinical mentorship to review and solidify known information and the translation of knowledge into practice.
SickKids nursing education and clinical mentorship will conclude at the end of this year, after the delivery of more nursing courses in PICU, Emergency, Cardiac and NICU. Six deliveries of a one-day bereavement workshop will also be held.

Nursing Leadership
Development of HMC nursing leadership is a key factor in sustaining change in pediatric nursing practice. One of the strategies to enhance expertise of leadership was to develop and deliver annual leadership symposiums at HMC. In 2013, the 2nd Symposium for Pediatric Nurse Leaders took place. SickKids Nurse Leaders worked in collaboration with HMC Pediatric Nurse Leaders to develop a high quality program. Guest speakers included an International Nurse Leader as well as Nurse Leaders, Managers and Educators from SickKids. The symposium aimed to enhance the leadership competencies of HMC Nurse Leaders to build a best practice work environment and enhance workplace culture resulting in improvement of patient outcomes and organizational performance indicators. Foundational leadership theories and various leadership strategies and exercises were provided and shared to extend nursing leaders’ understanding of evidence based leadership practices. The two day symposium was received with great enthusiasm. The HMC/SickKids Partnership is pleased to be working with HMC and SickKids Nurse Leaders again to create the 3rd and final Symposium for Pediatric Nurse Leaders in February 2015.
