Cardiology Services
HMC provides specialist cardiac care to Qatar’s population, mainly through its flagship cardiac facility the Heart Hospital. Using recognised international best practices, specialist expertise, cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary approach, HMC continues to improve patient outcomes and establish itself as a leader in cardiovascular medicine in the region. Cardiology services are also integrated across many of HMC’s other hospitals and facilities, as well as receiving external referrals.
Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology is a specialty that diagnoses and treats heart and blood vessel conditions using small tubes called catheters which are put through your blood vessels. These procedures help to avoid doing open-heart surgery while achieving life-saving outcomes, like when treating a heart attack.
Diseases or conditions treated: atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart valve disease, hypertrophic myopathy etc. Some interventions are performed for adult patients who have congenital heart issues.
Interventional cardiology procedures include cardiac catheterization, angiograms, (peripheral or coronary, angioplasties, coronary atherectomy, fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), stent placement, heart valve replacement and repair, thrombolysis etc.
Structural Heart Diseases Program
The Structural Heart Disease (SHD) service was established in 2019 to treat patients with structural heart disease abnormalities using mini-invasive and transcatheter approach.
Structural heart diseases include valvular heart disease (aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonic), adult congenital heart diseases, cardiomyopathies such as heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac masses and stroke prevention program.
The program includes three outpatient clinics, 24/7 inpatient consultation services and two catheterization laboratories procedural days. The team is made up of invasive and non-invasive cardiologists, a radiologist and a patient pathway coordinator who is managing all the necessary referral arrangements, pre-procedural evaluations and post-operative care.
Advanced Heart Failure Program
Heart failure is a lifelong progressive condition in which the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs for blood and oxygen. Advances in the treatment of heart failure and early intervention prevent acute decompensation and may delay disease progression and improve survival.
The Heart Hospital runs a Heart Failure Program and provides an inpatient and outpatient service. It is an integrated, multidisciplinary and specialized unit offering a full range of services to guide and help patients and families in managing their disease. Its purpose is to provide the best integrated approach to care through systematic assessment and management, counselling and patient education, promotion of patient compliance with treatment regimen.
The inpatient service cares for patients with acute decompensated heart failure as well as with advanced heart failure. Moreover, a Heart Failure Consultation team is available for advice and management of heart failure patients outside the unit.
The outpatient service (known as Advanced Heart Failure Clinic) is the only clinic in Qatar dedicated to providing advanced outpatient care to patients with heart failure as well as post heart transplant follow up care.
Electrophysiology
The electrophysiology service specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders (cardiac arrhythmias) and related disorders related to the heart's electrical activity. Specialists utilise state-of-the-art technology to perform evaluations and develop treatment strategies to reduce or eliminate symptoms, and restore optimal heart function.
Non-Invasive Cardiology
The Non-Invasive Cardiology Department diagnoses and treats patients with heart disease using external medical methods rather than surgical (invasive) methods. This approach, for example, would apply to patients who have unidentified chest pain or a history of heart disease.
The team is made up of specialist professionals including physicians, technologists, technicians, nurses and support staff who work collaboratively to provide our patients with the highest quality of care and support.
Procedures include electrocardiograph (ECG), echocardiography, Holter Test, stress tests and tilt table test.
Cardiac Lipids Service
The Cardiac Lipids service specialises in the assessment, management and treatment of patients with complex lipid disorders that contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
HMC provides comprehensive care for patients with heart conditions. The multidisciplinary team offers cutting-edge surgical and anesthetic techniques, with a full spectrum of adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeries, including:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Heart valve repair and replacement
- Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted cardiac surgery (including mitral repair and CABG)
- Ventricular assist devices
- Heart transplant
- Adult congenital surgery
Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation is a holistic clinical program to help patients recover and improve health and quality of life after experiencing a heart attack, heart surgery or other heart-related issues.
