Doha, 28 March 2022: Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Tobacco Control Center, a WHO Collaborating Center, has honored Al Jazeera anchorman Mr. Ahmad Taha for his role in emphasizing the ban of smoking scenes on Al Jazeera TV. Mr. Taha’s gesture in this regard reflects the high level of professionalism of Al Jazeera TV staff. Present at the honoring ceremony were Dr. Ahmad Al Mulla, Director of HMC’s Tobacco Control Center, Sheikh Dr. Mohamed bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Hisham Abdul Sattar, Head of Pulmonary Division at Hamad General Hospital, Dr. Kholoud Al-Motawaa, Head of Non-Communicable Disease Department at the Ministry of Public Health, and the staff at the HMC Tobacco Control Center.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Mulla said that the framework convention on tobacco control, which was ratified by many countries including Qatar, as well as Law No. 10 of 2016 On tobacco control in Qatar prohibit all forms of promotion, marketing, and direct and indirect advertising for tobacco products in the media. Dr. Mohamed Al Thani urged all members of the media to follow the good example of Mr. Taha and participate in instilling the principle of banning smoking on screens. Dr. Al Thani emphasized the important role of members of the media in combating smoking and tobacco use among members of the society, as well as in raising awareness of the harmful effects of smoking, including chronic diseases and serious illnesses that can be prevented by quitting all forms of tobacco smoking permanently.
