    ​Geneva, May 23 (QNA) - The World Health Assembly (WHA) elected HE Qatar's Minister of Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari, to chair its (Committee A) at the Assembly's meetings being held in Geneva until 31 May.

    WHA's (Committee A) debates several important issues, notably health emergencies monitoring and response, potential epidemic diseases, coordination of health workforce in emergencies with health consequences, antimicrobial resistance, polio and implementation of the International Health Regulations-2005. The Committee is also concerned with also discussing technical and health matters.

    In the area of communicable diseases, the Committee reviews the Global Vaccine Action Plan and the Global Response to Vector Control. With regards to non-communicable diseases, it discusses the preparations for the third high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases scheduled for 2018.

    The Committee is also considering the draft Global Plan of Action on the Public Health Response to Dementia, the Public Health Dimension of the World Drug Problem, the outcome of the Second International Conference on Nutrition and the report of the special Committee on the Elimination of Childhood Obesity, as well as topics related to cancer prevention and control in the context of an integrated approach, and enhancing synergies between the World Health Assembly and the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the prevention of hearing loss.

    Committee A is also considering progress in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, the role of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) health sector in achieving the 2020 target and beyond, and the Global Strategy on the Health of Women, Children and Adolescents.
