Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Al Faisal Without Borders (Alf) Foundation last night jointly launched two very important campaigns – the Ramadan Voluntary Blood Donation campaign and the National Organ Donation campaign. The two campaigns were officially launched by His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alf at the City Center Doha.

For the voluntary blood donation campaign, mobile blood donor units are being dispatched to locations around Qatar to encourage voluntary blood donation. The main Blood Donor Center at the main quarters next to the Consultative Council will receive volunteer donors from 8 pm to midnight during Ramadan.

The national organ donation campaign booths will be set up in shopping malls and other prominent locations around the country, where Qatar Organ Donation Center’s (Hiba) specially-trained employees will talk to the public about the importance of organ donation and answer questions people might have. Visitors to the stands will be able register as an organ donor on the spot.

HMC has expressed its appreciation to His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, as well as other local organizations and shopping malls for sponsoring and hosting the campaigns throughout Ramadan.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Faisal said: “We always strive to create a community partnership by providing moral support to the efforts of the Supreme Council of Health and the Blood Donor Center at HMC, in order to enrich the blood bank stocks throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. This campaign is vital as it aims to provide support and assistance to patients in need of blood, and to spread the culture of voluntary blood and organ donation throughout the society.”

Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Director of Qatar Organ Transplant Center at HMC, said: “I invite the public to visit one of the organ donation stands during the evenings, throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, to learn more about organ donation and transplantation and those who are interested can register as a donor.”

Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of Qatar Organ Donation Center at HMC, said: "The main objectives of this campaign are: to increase awareness within the community about organ donation; to increase the number of registered donors; and to hopefully reduce any concerns or misconceptions that people may have regarding organ donation and transplantation services in Qatar.”

Mr. Ali Al Khater, Executive Director for Corporate Communication at HMC said of the campaign launch: “We at HMC are always eager to co-operate with well-meaning organizations like Al Faisal Without Border Foundation on important public health awareness campaigns such as the organ and blood donation campaigns, and we thank them for their support. We believe that donating blood or registering as an organ donor is among the noblest of acts, and we thank everyone who has supported these campaigns so far and hope that others are inspired to give the gift of life and donate too.”

Abdullatif Ali Al-Yafei, General Manager of ALF said:  “Now in its fourth year, the campaign has proven to be crucial for the nation’s health. We hope this year’s campaign will be equally successful and attract even more donors and today we affirm the cultural vision of ALF as a leading national and international institution that aspires to promote sustainable development and decency.”

Ms. Siddiqa Al-Mahmoudi, Medical Manager of HMC’s Blood Donor Center praised the support extended to the blood donation campaign by the Alf Foundation and various other community groups.
