Head Nurse, Cardiology Telemetry Unit, Heart Hospital
Ms. Sakina Kashkoei, a Head Nurse at the Cardiology Telemetry Unit in Heart Hospital, says nursing is all about humanity and putting oneself in the patient’s shoes. The Iranian national started her career at HMC after receiving a Diploma in Nursing from the Higher Institute of Nursing in Qatar in 2003. After completing her internship, rotating through different departments at HMC, Sakina joined the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
“I gained a lot of knowledge and skills during the four years I spent at the PICU. It gave me the opportunity to be selected for the position of pediatric nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. I was certified to perform scrubbing with physicians for both pediatric and adult cases in diagnostic and later for interventional procedures.”
In 2010, Sakina was promoted to the position of Charge Nurse at the Cath Lab. The following year, in 2011, she applied to the University of Calgary – Qatar (UCQ) to complete her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She successfully completed her studies with distinction in 2013; in 2011 and 2012 she was awarded an undergraduate scholarship.
“Studying at UCQ helped me climb the career ladder at HMC. Right after I started my studies I was promoted to the position of Head Nurse at one of the Cardiology Telemetry Units at Heart Hospital. I believe that a continuous commitment to both my job and education enabled me to succeed. My education was essential in helping me manage the Unit.”
Sakina says that education and continuous self-development is the path nurses should take to advance at their career. She said it benefits both the patient and one’s colleagues.
Sakina is an active participant in charitable projects within the pediatric cardiothoracic team; she has providing care to pediatric patient’s post-heart surgery in Sudan twice, one in March and again in November, 2013.
