Their Journey

Director of Nursing - Al Wakra Hospital

Ms. Parwaneh Elias Al Shibani joined HMC in 1989 as a Staff Nurse Trainee. While studying at Qatar University to obtain her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, she progressed to the role of Ophthalmology Nurse. After completing her degree she became a Medical ICU Nurse, followed by advancement to the role of Subspecialty Pediatric Bronchoscopy Specialty Nurse in 2001.

In 2006 Parwaneh was promoted to her first managerial role, Head Nurse at Hamad General Hospital’s (HGH) Medical Inpatient Unit. Parwaneh further excelled, advancing to the role of Head of the Patient and Family Education Unit of HGH in 2008. Five years later, in 2013, she was promoted to her current post as Director of Nursing for the Medical Division of Al Wakra Hospital; today she is responsible for over 300 nursing staff, including eight Head Nurses.

Parwaneh says being an active participant in HMC activities, and taking every opportunity to develop her skills as a leader and improve HMC’s services, has helped her move up the career ladder.

“I was a part-time clinical instructor for nursing college students and was responsible for developing educational pamphlets for Patient and Family Education. I have participated in two research projects with the pediatric medical team and I’ve completed the one-year Leadership for Change (LFC) program. Currently I am planning to join the train-the-trainer team for the LFC course.”

Parwaneh says she finds problem solving and undertaking new challenges to be the most enjoyable part of her current role. The lifelong learner says she hopes to expand her knowledge and skills by venturing into fields that are not directly related to clinical practice, like nursing informatics and quality management. She encourages all her colleagues to take every possible opportunity for self-development, including participating in the various courses and conferences offered by HMC. She is a firm believer in teamwork and says it is an essential component of providing patients with the safest, most effective and compassionate care.

“Nursing is all about service. As a nurse, we are all advocates for our patients; we must always remember to provide quality care and to remain focused on our patients.”
