
Dr. Hans Kerkkamp was trained as a Medical Doctor in 1982 and specialized in anesthesia and intensive care in the Netherlands. During his work as an Anesthesiologist he was an active member of the National Society of Anesthesiologists (NVA). During this time, he was one of the founders and developers of a system for quality measurement in anesthetic practice (minimal standards). As a Chairman of the National Society of Anesthesiologists (2000 – 2004) he was involved in a National program for quality measurement in Health Care by using KPI’s (2004) which was supported by the Ministry of Public Health.
In 2007, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer of a teaching hospital in the Netherlands. He was responsible for clinical performance, training and teaching, quality and safety, innovation and research. During this time, he introduced many quality and safety systems such as clinical audits, dashboard for quality control, system for safe surgery (business redesign), lean management (productive ward), clinical pathways, etc.
He also developed a program for patient engagement. One of his programs was the introduction of a system for care guaranties for patients. In August 2014, he resigned as a board member. After this time, he started his own consultancy company and did many projects that are both national and international.
Since January 2015, he has been working at HMC as a Deputy Chief. His work is focused on quality improvement and patient safety as well as innovation.
