Dr Mahir Petkar has over 20 years of experience as a histopathologist. He joined Hamad General Hospital in September 2017 as a Senior Consultant Histopathologist in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP). He is currently the Hepatobiliary and Upper Gastrointestinal Lead Histopathologist.
Dr Petkar completed his primary medical qualification from Grant Medical College, Sir J J Group of Hospitals, Mumbai University, India in 1997 and subsequently joined the MD Pathology residency programme at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, passing out in 2000. After briefly working in Kuwait, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he joined the Histopathology Training Program as part of the South London Training Deanery, primarily working at the St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London and the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust, Guildford between 2003 and 2006. He obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Certificate of Completion of Training in 2006, entering the Specialist Register in 2007.
Dr Petkar started his consultant career in 2007 at Broomfield Hospital, Essex, U.K. , where he was the Lead Head and Neck Cancer pathologist for the Mid-Essex region. During this period, he also developed a special interest in dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology. He participated in the multidisciplinary management of patients with cancers of these sites, while retaining his core skills in other areas of histopathology.
Dr Petkar is an avid and enthusiastic teacher. He was the Educational Supervisor for Histopathology trainees and the Pathology Audit Lead for various periods of time while working in the UK. He is currently the Training Program Director for the Histopathology Training Program in DLMP and is also the Vice Chair for Anatomic Pathology in DLMP.
