Dr Mahir Abdulla Petkar MBBS  MD  FRCPath
Dr Mahir Petkar has over 20 years of experience as a histopathologist; just over half at consultant level. He joined Hamad General Hospital in September 2017 as a Senior Consultant Histopathologist in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP). He is currently the Hepatobiliary Lead Histopathologist.

Dr Petkar completed his primary medical qualification from the Grant Medical College, Sir J J Group of Hospitals, Mumbai University, India in 1997 and subsequently joined the MD Pathology residency program at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, passing out in 2000. After briefly working in Kuwait, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he joined the Histopathology Training Program as part of the South London Training Deanery, primarily working at the St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London and the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust, Guildford between 2003 and 2006. He obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2006 and the Certificate of Completion of Training, entering the Specialist Register in 2007. 

Dr Petkar began his consultant career at Broomfield Hospital, Essex, UK in 2007.  He became the Head & Neck Cancer Lead pathologist for the Mid-Essex area. He also developed a special interest in skin cancers and hepatobiliary cancers. He fully participated in the multidisciplinary management of patients with these cancers, as well as retaining his core skills in other areas of histopathology.

Dr Petkar is an avid and enthusiastic teacher. He is currently the Associate Program Director for the Histopathology Training Program at the DLMP.
