Andres M. Rubiano, MD, PhD, is a professor of neurosciences and neurosurgery at Universidad El Bosque in Bogotá (Colombia) and professor of neurological surgery at Universidad del Valle in Cali (Colombia).
He is devoted to clinical practice and research in trauma, emergency care, neurotrauma, and critical care. Dr. Rubiano earned his medical degree from the University of Valle in Colombia in 1998 and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of El Bosque in Bogota. In 2006, he was selected for a Neurotrauma and Critical Care Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University, sponsored by the J. Douglas Miller International Fellowship Award from the Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Upon completion, he received a postdoctoral position sponsored by the NIH Fogarty International Center at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue trauma research training between 2007 and 2009. In 2012, he was awarded the ASHOKA International Social Entrepreneurship Award for his extensive work on healthcare education in austere environments. In 2016, he received an Honoris Causa degree in prehospital care technology for emergency and disasters from Universidad Adventista in Medellín (Colombia).
He holds a PhD candidate position in Global Health, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Medicine from Università del Piemonte Orientale in Novara (Italy), through the Research Center in Emergency and Disaster Medicine (CRIMEDIM) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), through the Research Group on Emergency and Disaster Medicine (ReGEDiM).
Dr. Rubiano is the founder of MEDITECH Foundation, a research and training center in Colombia dedicated to improving medical skills for prehospital providers and physicians in advanced trauma and critical care. He also acts as President of the Global Neuro Foundation in Davos, Switzerland, Chair of the Colombian Chapter of the ACS Committee on Trauma, and past Chair of the Neurotraumatology Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). He is the actual chair of the International Committee of the
Neurotrauma and Critical Care Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).
