Dr. Emilio Perucca
Prof. Emilio Perucca was born in Varese, Italy in 1950. He obtained an M.D. degree at the University of Pavia in 1975, a Ph.D. Diploma at the University of London in 1980 and a Specialization in Neurology at the University of Pavia in 1982. Between 1976 and 1981, he was Research Registrar in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology of St. Bartholomew's Hospital and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London. Between 1981 and 1987, he was Lecturer in Medical Pharmacology at the University of Pavia, Italy. In 1988 he was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the same University. He is currently a Full Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the same University and Director of the Clinical Trial Centre and the Laboratories for Diagnostics and Applied Biological Research at the Institute of Neurology IRCCS C. Mondino Foundation in Pavia.
Professor Perucca is a member of the Editorial/Advisory Boards of several journals, including Epilepsia, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, CNS Drugs, Epileptic Disorders, Epilepsy Research, Seizure, European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Expert Reviews in Neurotherapeutics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Lancet Neurology, and Clinical Drug Investigation. He acts as a regular reviewer for over 30 international journals.
He is Past-President of the Italian League against Epilepsy, and a member of the Commission on Education and the Commission on Therapeutic Strategies the ILAE. Between 2002 to 2008, he served as a member of the Executive Board of the Clinical Pharmacology Section of the International Union of Pharmacology Societies (IUPHAR). He is currently a member of the Sub-commission for National Licensing Authorizations and the Sub-commission for European Affairs of the Committee on Medicines (AIFA) of the Italian Ministry of Health.
In 1997 he received the Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from ILAE and the International Epilepsy Bureau. In 1999 he was awarded honorary membership to the Polish Epilepsy Society.
Professor E. Perucca was responsible for establishing the Unit of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Pavia. His main research interests focus on the treatment of epilepsy, with particular reference to clinical pharmacokinetics, therapeutic drug monitoring, clinical trial methodology, and outcome assessment. He is also interested in using drugs to treat other neurological disorders and psychiatric diseases.
He co-edited or contributed to several international textbooks. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 PubMed-listed full-length scientific publications in clinical pharmacology and epilepsy therapy.
