Professor Wael Aldelaimi

Dr. Aldelaimi is the Professor of Global Health and Epidemiology and Division Chief of Global Health in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California San Diego, and Associate Director of the University of California, San Diego Institute for Public Health. Dr. Adelaimi has worked on chronic diseases at a global setting.  He is PI of the NIH-funded Research Ethics Education Program in Jordan which is developing training in research methods for medical professionals in developing countries. Dr. Adelaimi conducted research on health disparity to address the epidemiology of mental health conditions among Somali and Iraqi refugee mothers and their children in San Diego. He also launched and is the current Director of the Global Health Initiative in the Middle East, focusing on refugees, along with Harvard University, George Washington University and the University of San Diego faculty (see

Dr. Adelaimi has accumulated years of experience in dealing with diverse collaborations and large team science initiatives, including leading working groups as part of the WHO European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC); one of the largest cohort studies in the world. He has participated in the coordination of both the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study at Harvard University, and leading a large team of investigators for state-wide surveys tracking attitudes and behaviors of Californians regarding tobacco.
