Prof. Abou-Samra is an academic MD/PhD physician scientist certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Professor Abou-Samra worked at several international academic institutions, which include Lyon I University, France for 5 years, the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland for 2 years, Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital for 21 years, and the Wayne State University School of Medicine for 5 years where he was Professor of Medicine, Professor of Physiology and Professor of Molecular Genetics, Chief of the endocrine division, Director of the endocrinology fellowship program and Director of a T32 endocrine research training program.

Professor Abou-Samra received multiple recognitions for his scientific contributions and led research continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health between 1986 until 2014. He is known for his molecular and clinical research on G protein-coupled receptors, insulin action and nutritionally-regulated genes. Professor Abou-Samra published over 150 original papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to 5 USA patents. He served as a member of the NIH endocrine study section and member of editorial board for several international journals.

In Qatar he is leading multiple research projects funded by the Qatar National Research Foundation aiming at understanding the genetics of diabetes, insulin resistance and best method for prevention of diabetes. He has recently led the development of a major national research cluster, Qatar Diabetes Prevention Program (QDPP), that include 7 projects aiming at diabetes prevention and understanding molecular and genetic markers for pre-diabetes and early diabetes in Qatar.

In January 2013 Prof. Abou-Samra joined Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar, as the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Weil Cornell Medical College - Qatar. Professor Abou-Samra is Co-Chair for the Qatar National Diabetes Committee, which developed the Qatar national diabetes strategy in 2015-2016 and currently is supervising its implementation. He is also the Director of the Qatar Metabolic Institute.
