Dr. Akil heads the Genetics and Metabolic Diseases clinical research and Precision Medicine of Diabetes Prevention lab at Sidra Medicine. She obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from UNSW, a master's in immunology, and a teaching diploma. Additionally, she holds an International Executive Master’s in Business Administration (EMBA) from HEC-Paris Business School, majoring in entrepreneurship and innovation in the medical tourism sector.

With three postdoctoral roles in pediatric infectious diseases, myeloma cancer drug targeting, and Envirogenetics of type 1 diabetes, her expertise drives clinical genomic research for complex disorders. She's secured over $7.3 million USD in grants as Lead Principal Investigator from organizations like Rebecca L Cooper Medical Research Foundation, Qatar National Research Fund, and JDRF.

She leads projects using Genetic Risk Scores for autoimmune disease screening, particularly type 1 diabetes, and is actively involved in developing genomic newborn screening for treatable conditions both rare and complex diseases. Her approach combines advanced research technologies with fostering Qatar's research growth, focusing on precision medicine.
