Dr. Stephen Beer

Dr. Stephen Beer is a Senior Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the National Diabetes Center at Al Wakra Hospital, Qatar; a post he has held since 13 April 2015. He qualified in medicine from the University of Liverpool, UK in 1981.

Dr. Beer completed his training in Internal Medicine, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Research in Liverpool, Norwich, Cambridge and London, UK. His MD thesis described the development of an Immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) of proinsulin and he has a number of peer-reviewed publications in both clinical and laboratory aspects of diabetes and metabolism, as well as health-related quality of life.

As a Consultant in Northern Lincolnshire for 22 years, he led the development of a highly regarded specialized diabetes service. He was responsible for the introduction of patient-centered structured education programs, including DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) for Type 1 diabetes patients and DESMOND for Type 2 diabetes patients. The team he led was able to demonstrate significant improvement in outcomes, particularly in diabetic pregnancies and in bed days used for diabetic foot problems, and most importantly in major amputation rates.
