Dr. Fernando graduated from the University College of Wales Medical School, Cardiff, South Wales, UK before completing his advanced anesthesia training at the Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte’s Hospitals in London. He has been a consultant anesthetist since 1994 while initially working at the Royal Free Hospital in London and transferring in 2008 to University College London Hospital where he coordinated mainly clinical research in obstetric anesthesia until June 2017. He served as the Honorary Treasurer for the 2,500member Obstetric Anesthetists’ Association (OAA) for 6 years chairing its scientific and educational meetings, subcommittee for another 6 years before taken over as OAA President for a three-year term from May 2014 to May 2017.
Dr. Fernand has also worked for 6 years as part of the Obstetric Anesthesia subcommittee of the European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA), for 10 years as an examiner for the Royal College of Anesthetists, finishing his duties in June 2013 as well as a 4-year term (2013 to 2016) on the Council of the Association of Anesthetists of GB and Ireland (AAGBI).
Dr. Fernando is on the editorial boards of two journals including the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia and lectures extensively both within the UK and abroad. He is the co-editor of two international obstetric anesthesia textbooks including the recently published, “Oxford Textbook of Obstetric Anesthesia” and “Obstetric Anesthesiology: An Illustrated Case-Based Approach”. He has published multiple peer-reviewed original research papers. He currently has taken up a challenging post at the Women’s Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) in Doha, Qatar, which delivers over 20,000 babies each year, including over 550 caesarean deliveries each month. He is currently responsible for leading the clinical obstetric anesthesia research at the WWRC and assisting with the obstetric anesthesia fellowship training program.
