Marco Abraham Marcus is the Chairman of Anesthesiology, ICU, and Perioperative Medicine at HMC. He received his training in medicine in Leiden, the Netherlands, and as an anesthesiologist at the KU Leuven, Belgium, in 1990. He has completed research on cardiac physiology and pharmacokinetics in Leiden,  Houston and Salt Lake City. He was employed as an anesthesiologist and basic and clinical investigator in the KU Leuven and the Westfaelischen Wilhelms Universitaet Muenster, Germany. After completion of his PhD (magna cum laude), he completed his habilitation on Uterine Bloodflow and was appointed as a scientific director at the Department of Anesthesiology at the Maastricht University in 2001. He went on to become a full professor in Maastricht in anesthesia and perioperative care in 2008.

Marco Marcus has served as the Chair of the Concilium Anaesthesiologicum and Chair of the Central Education Committee of Maastricht University Medical Center. He has also been Vice-chair of the scientific committee of the NVA. Along with his current position, he continues to hold the position of Professor in Maastricht and Muenster.

His clinical and research interests focus on the topics of education, the transition of acute into chronic pain, pharmacokinetics, new materials and blood management. He has been involved in the development of several national clinical guidelines. Marco Marcus has also been the recipient of several awards such as the August Bier Preis of the DGAI.
He is the author of more than a 160 cited articles, 50 non-cited articles and several book chapters. He has been invited more than 200 times to be a guest speaker and he keeps also patents in his name.
