Prof. Walid Al-Wali is Senior Consultant Medical Microbiologist at Hamad General Hospital and Al-Wakra Hospital. He is also the Chair of Infection Control of Ambulatory Care Centre. He has been instrumental in the development of Microbiology services at HGH and Al-Wakra Hospital and involved in a number of initiatives including strategic planning in infection control and antimicrobial stewardship. He has also been involved in education and training activities in relation to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infections.

In 1997, he was appointed as Consultant Medical Microbiologist/Infection Control Doctor of the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, UK. He was granted Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer status with the University of Sheffield. He undertook the role of Clinical Skills Co-ordinator of the Postgraduate Education Centre, then Lead Clinician in Clinical Effectiveness of the Trust. He was then appointed as Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the Trust in 2000 until 2017. He was then appointed as Executive Medical Director and Caldicott Guardian in 2001 until 2011, and in addition also undertook the role of Chief of Division of Medicine from 2006-2009 for The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. He was then appointed as Director for Laboratory medicine from 2016 to 2017. He was then appointed as Honorary Professor to the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Sheffield Hallam University in 2008 and Senior International Advisor to the University in 2013.

On a national level, he was an external advisor to the Care Quality Commission (2006 – 2009) and was involved in inspecting several hospitals in relation to compliance with the Hygiene Code.  He was also a member of the National Advisory Group in the reduction of MRSA and HCAIs and has assisted in reducing HCAIs in NHS Trusts.

He led the Level 7 Credit 30 Healthcare Associated Infections Module at Sheffield Hallam University. He co-led the Medical Leadership Programme for Iraqi doctors, dentists and pharmacists at the University. He was also instrumental in the education and training of national and international doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists and biomedical scientists including training Physician Assistants at the University and regional NHS Hospitals.

He was instrumental in establishing collaboration between the Ministry of Health of the KRG and Sheffield Hallam University and international healthcare organizations including education and training healthcare professionals at the University namely doctors, pharmacists, nurses and Oncology Physicists.
