​Welcome to the Physiotherapy and Lymphedema Department which is located on the ground floor of the National Center for Cancer Care and Research. Our unit has a number of physical therapists and certified lymphedema therapists specializing (specialized) in cancer rehabilitation, palliative care and lymphedema management. This team works with patients to help them carry out day to day tasks to the best of their ability.

The department also works closely with a number of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), such as Breast MDT and Head and Neck MDT, and also works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals within Hamad Medical Corporation. This is an essential part of providing patients with professional rehabilitation services and ensures they receive the best possible care and assistance that enable them to regain basic motor functions, avoid any permanent loss of function and improve their quality of life.

Our Physiotherapeutic interventions include:
  • Range of motion, strengthening and cardiovascular exercise
  • Breathing/relaxation and energy conservation techniques
  • Joint, soft tissue and scar mobilization
  • Gait re-education, provision of walking aids and equipment, exercise therapy
  • Patient and family education.
Lymphedema management includes:
  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Compression therapy including measurement and fitting of off-the-shelf and custom garments
  • Decongestive exercises
  • Skin and nail care
