Upon completion of his medical study at the VU University Medical Center (VUmc) in Amsterdam in 1995, Dr. Hutink obtained a PhD in cardiology in the same year. He completed his anesthesiology training at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam in 2001. In that year, he started as staff anesthesiologist at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, where he specialized in cancer anesthesia.
In 2007, he moved to Australia and worked as consultant anesthetist in Melbourne. In 2008, he joined the Department of Anesthesiology at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, where he worked until 2019 with a focus on airway management research, neuro-anaesthesia, simulation and teaching. For VUmc he worked in 2011 three months at Fundasion Mariadal Hospital in the Caribbean, on the Dutch Island of Bonaire, where he was advisor for emergency medicine, critical care and aeromedical evacuation.
Currently, he is self-employed consultant anesthetist, works in different hospitals, and combines this with teaching. He has published many papers and is co-author of medical books within his fields of interest. He was member of the International Advisory Board of Anesthesia Journal. He was local chair for the second World Airway Management Meeting 2019, which was organized in Amsterdam.
