Wahiba Elhag is a senior consultant in bariatric Medicine at the National Bariatric Center at Qatar Metabolic Institute in Doha, Qatar. She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, Qatar and the program’s Geriatric Medicine fellowship program director.

In 2011, she established the first bariatric medicine service at Hamad Medical Corporation, pioneering comprehensive care for patients with obesity in the region. In 2014, she further advanced medical education by founding the Bariatric Medicine Fellowship Program, the first of its kind in the Middle East, setting a benchmark for specialized training in this field.

Her clinical expertise lies in medical weight management and the holistic care of patients before and after bariatric surgery. A passionate educator, she is dedicated to mentoring students, guiding healthcare professionals,

She has authored numerous publications and book chapters focusing on obesity, medical weight management, pharmacological treatments for obesity, and the outcomes and benefits of bariatric surgery, including its impact on adolescents. Her work has been widely published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, contributing valuable insights to the field.

Dr. Wahiba was also instrumental in developing Qatar National Guidelines for the Management of Obesity and National Guidelines for Bariatric Surgery in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health.

Before joining HMC, Dr. Wahiba worked as a Bariatric consultant in the weight management clinics at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital and Saint Alexius Medical Center in Chicago, USA.

She received her American Board certification in Obesity Medicine in 2010 and the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2007.

Dr. Wahiba completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (Chicago, IL-USA) in 2007 after receiving her degree in Medicine and surgery from the University of Gezira (Sudan).

She is an active member of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Obesity Medicine.​​
