- Andrew Elder is the first geriatrician to become President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
- Educated at Edinburgh Medical School, he has been an NHS consultant in medicine for older people since 1993 and in 2015 was appointed as an Honorary Professor at Edinburgh Medical School.
- Recognised as expert in the teaching and assessment of clinical skills, Professor Elder has taught, assessed or lectured on bedside clinical skills in over twenty countries in the past ten years.
- He was Medical Director of MRCP(UK) – the world’s largest postgraduate medical examination – from 2013 to 2018 and Chair of the AoMRC Assessment Committee from 2015-18.
- He has been a visiting professor at a number of US institutions including Stanford University, California, where he is currently a Presence Fellow and Scholar, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Washington University St Louis, and in 2022 he became the inaugural Visiting Professor of Bedside Medicine at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore.
- In 2021 he was awarded Mastership of the American College of Physicians, becoming the first doctor practising In Scotland, and only the second in the UK, to attain this honour since its inception in 1923.
- He believes that compassion, communication and core clinical skills remain fundamental to high quality care and therefore have prime importance in contemporary medical education.
