The Academic Health System (AHS) in Qatar is formed of eight partner organizations working towards transforming healthcare in Qatar. It is the first partnership of its kind in the MENA region and the world’s first nation-wide academic health system. The Clinical subcommittee of the AHS initiated a five-year project that aims to increase public awareness about mental health. In this presentation, I will refer to one component of this project: raising awareness among school staff.
We aimed to train school staff on:
- Promoting mental health and early recognition of psychological disturbance or mental illness among secondary level students.
- Decreasing the stigma attached to psychological disturbance and mental illness among secondary level students
- Management of behavioral disturbance at schools
With a profound collaborative work from the Psychiatry Hospital /Hamad Medical Corporation, three one-day workshops were delivered to school counsellors, social workers and other staffs working in more than 65 independent schools. Attendees’ feedback was collected.
Mental Health awareness and skill training is an area for development. There was a general agreement on the need to continue promoting on mental health issues on regular basis and on a larger scale. Recommendations and challenges were presented by the attendees for presentation to the Supreme Council of Education.
