Once you have been diagnosed with diabetes your first visit to a specialist doctor will include the following:
- A check of your medical history and a thorough physical examination
- A series of blood and urine tests to determine the specifics of your condition. Based on the results you may have additional tests. If additional tests are required, the specifics will be explained to you
- You will be asked questions about your lifestyle; such as do you smoke, what type of food do you eat and do you exercise regularly
- The diabetes team will begin to work with you on a care plan based on all of the above. Remember that each patient is unique and care plans will differ from patient to patient.
