Test ID: Norepinephrine (spot urine)
Norepinephrine (spot urine)
Norepinephrine (spot urine)
Useful For

The investigation of hypertension, specifically for phaeochromocytoma

In paediatric patients, the measurement of norepinephrine can be useful for the investigation of neuroblastomas.

Method name and description

High performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrochemical detection.

Clinical information

Urine norepinephrine is measured in a catecholamine panel including epinephrine and dopamine.  Together, the urine catecholamines are typically used in the investigation of phaechromocytomas and paragangliomas.  Phaeochromocytomas and paraganagliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumours characterised by the overproduction of catecholamines.  Often, patients present with classical symptoms of episodic headache, sweating and tachycardia.

In paediatric patients the measurement of urine catecholamines can be useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of neuroblastomas.

Insufficient specimen quantity.

Biological reference intervals and clinical decision values

Urine Norepinephrine calculated according to creatinine:

                  Age Referance Interval
0 - 11 months 17 - 207 umol/mol creatinine
1 - 4 year 17 - 194 umol/mol creatinine
4 - 10 year 18 - 72 umol/mol creatinine
10 - 18 year 3 - 70 umol/mol creatinine
>18 year 6 - 75 umol/mol creatinine
Factors affecting test performance and result interpretation

Antihypertensive medications, acute stress, acute illness, obstructive sleep apnoea can all cause increases in urine epinephrine excretion.

Turnaround time / Days and times test performed / Specimen retention time

Turnaround time: 5 working days.

Days and times test performed: Once a week.

Specimen retention time: 30 days.
