Clinical information
|
E-cadherin is a 120kDa transmembrane cell adhesion molecule. The gene has been localized on chromosome 16q221. In its extracellular domain, E-cadherin is involved in cell-cell adhesion through calcium-regulated homophilic interactions, whereas in its intracellular domain, E-cadherin connects to the actin cytoskeleton via catenins. E-cadherin has a significant function in intracellular adhesion of epithelial cells, the establishment of epithelial polarization, glandular differentiation, and stratification. It is localized mainly in the adherens junctions and concentrates the urokinase plasminogen activator and the epidermal growth factor receptor to cell contract sites. Down-regulation of E-cadherin expression has been observed in a number of carcinomas and is usually associated with advance stage and progression.
