About HMC
A focus on quality
We have sought and achieved accreditation from leading organizations in recent years across many areas. Accreditation demonstrates our ability to deliver the very highest international standards of care to our patients. In 2016, we achieved the significant distinction of becoming the first healthcare system across the globe to have all its hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International under the Academic Medical Center accreditation program. Our National Ambulance Service, Home Healthcare Service, Stroke Service and Palliative Care have all received prestigious JCI accreditation since 2011. Additionally, our Trauma System, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology College, nursing education and fellowship programs have all been accredited for the quality of service they provide.
World-class facilities and technology
The quality of our facilities is comparable with the world’s best healthcare providers. Throughout this decade we have opened seven new hospitals and multiple specialist facilities, each providing the very best healthcare environments in which our dedicated teams can treat patients. From robotic surgery to hydrotherapy pools, telemedicine to advanced cancer treatment technology, pharmacy robots to ultra-modern air ambulances, we are harnessing the most advanced technology for the benefit of our patients.
A commitment to research
Our researchers are dedicated to finding new and innovative treatments for our patients. Research is central to our academic health vision, which at its heart combines innovative research, top-class education and excellent clinical care. Along with our partner organizations, we have made great progress as an Academic Health System (AHS) in Qatar. Through our AHS institutes – neurosciences, cardiology, metabolic and cancer – we are actively undertaking research into key conditions that affect Qatar’s population, such as stroke, heart disease and diabetes.
Health promotion
Focusing on both preventative and curative care, we are guided by the principle that a healthy population, served by a world-class, well-managed healthcare system, is essential to the country’s development. We have increased our commitment to health promotion, understanding that as a national healthcare provider we have a role to play in keeping people healthy and free from disease, as well as treating the symptoms of ill health. In recent years we have run national awareness campaigns on stroke, heart health and diabetes, each aimed at educating the public and the main signs and symptoms of these conditions as well as how to prevent them. We have also opened a number of services and facilities dedicated to health promotion, notably our new National Obesity Center and Smoking Control Center.
Future expansion
Our impressive expansions plans are set to continue over the next few years. In 2019 we will open our new Trauma and Emergency Tower at Hamad General Hospital. This impressive building will provide a state-of-the-art environment in which our clinical teams can treat patients requiring emergency care. The new facility will be arranged over four floors and accommodate more than 220 patient stations. It will more than quadruple the existing Emergency Department’s space, providing greater capacity to care for patients presenting with a range of illnesses and injuries, with a focus on life-threatening medical conditions. We are also nearing the opening of the Itqan Clinical Simulation and Innovation Center. This state-of-the-art education and training facility will transform clinical education and training for Qatar’s current and aspiring healthcare professionals. The center will provide a safe and realistic environment in which clinical professionals can hone their skills, practice new and advanced techniques, and develop their clinical competencies.
