Pre and Post -OP Instruction to the Patient and Family
  • Fasting should be followed as HMC NPO policy.

    Fasting Recommendations to Reduce the Risk of Pulmonary Aspiration.
    • Ingested material minimum fasting period
    • Clear liquids - 2 hours
    • Breast milk - 4 hours
    • Infant formula, Non-human milk -  6 hours
    • Light meal - 6 hours
    • Heavy meal - 8 hours
    1. These recommendations apply to healthy patients who are undergoing elective procedures. They are not intended for women in Labor. Following the guidelines does not guarantee that a complete gastric emptying has occurred.
    2. The fasting periods noted above apply to all ages.
    3. Examples of clear liquids includes water, fruit juices without pulp, carbonated beverages, clear tea, and black coffee.
    4. Since non-human milk is similar to solids in gastric emptying time, the amount ingested should be considered when determining an appropriate fasting period.
    5. A light meal typically consists of toast and clear liquids. Meals that include fried or fatty foods or meat may prolong gastric emptying time. Both the amount and type of foods ingested should be considered when determining an appropriate fasting period.
    6. Patients who had gastric banding are at increase risk of aspiration. Available guidelines recommend a liquid diet 24 hours prior to anaesthesia/sedation.
  • Patient who is taking regular medications must follow as advised below:
    • Patient taking antihypertensive medications – patient can take morning dose with sips of water except diuretics.
    • If patient is taking oral anti hyperglycaemic medications- omit morning dose of OHA (Oral Hypoglycaemic agents).
    • If patient is taking Thyroxin (Hypothyroid medication) – Patient can take morning dose with sips of water.
    • If patient is taking anti-epileptic medications give morning dose with sips of water.
    • Aspirin should be stopped according to Surgeon’s advised.
  • A responsible adult escort must accompany the patient to their appointment and escort them home after treatment under conscious sedation. Arrangements must be made to ensure the patient is supervised for a minimum of the rest of the day. It is essential than  the escort gives attention to the patient and therefore should not be responsible for  children, elderly and/or dependent relatives.
  • For the remainder of the day, patients must not:
    • return to work;
    • drive a car or other vehicle;
    • consume alcohol;
    • operate machinery (including kitchen equipment);
    • climb heights (e.g. ladders, scaffolding);
    • be in charge of other people;
    • make important decisions (e.g. signing legal documents).
  • Patients who are trying to conceive, are pregnant or are breast-feeding must inform in advance of their appointment to the surgeon.
  • Assign nurse will inform you what time to start food.
  • All jewelleries and valuable thinks should be kept at home. Nail polish, dentures, contact lenses etc. are not allowed in OR
