Our goal is to ensure that our newly hired nurses receive consistent information regarding organizational policies (Nursing Department and Human Resource specific), procedures, standards that support practice and familiarize them with HMC’s vision, mission, values, goals, organizational structure, JCI standards and Quality Improvement model . The program is designed using a competency based approach to facilitate the development of staged competence of the new hires with reference to Benner’s (1984) “Novice to expert clinical practice model”. The activity based teaching/ learning strategies used in the GNO program help learners integrate knowledge with relevant clinical situations.  
 
GNO provides an overview of our journey at HMC towards moving into an Academic Health Care Facility, our partnership with other academic institutions at a national and international level, as well as Qatar's National Vision 2030 and National Health Strategic plans 2011-2016.

New nurses are made aware of educational infrastructure and the scope of educational services offered by NER to support the continuing professional development of nursing staff at HMC. Introductory sessions on EBP and research help the learners gain a conceptual understanding of the research process, research utilization relating to its contribution to nursing science, changes in clinical practice and patient care outcomes. We currently have nurses from over 40 different nationalities at HMC. For that reason, cultural diversity awareness training is included in the GNO to prepare new hires to deliver culturally competent patient care services which take into account the importance of cultural communication. Communication practice exercise sessions enable the nurses to acquire and demonstrate effective communication skills which are fundamental in developing therapeutic nurse-client relationship and maintaining a positive practice work environment at HMC. GNO also provides critical and creative thinking sessions for new hires to focus on basic critical and creative thinking skills that are vital for sound clinical decision making.
 
Basic life support training, IV therapy certification and medication administration programs are included that provide learners with essential knowledge and skills which are vital for ensuring safe patient care while advancing their clinical competence.
