Heart Hospital is the specialist hospital in Qatar for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery patients. It is made up of a state-of-the-art 20 bed coronary care unit, an equally impressive 12 bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit (ICU), a 24 bed surgical high-dependency unit (HDU) and a 60 bed ward. In order to provide the safest and most effective care, and to respect patient privacy, every bed in the hospital is in a single room and the 60 ward beds are individually monitored through an electronic system called telemetry.
The hospital has three operating theaters, including a dedicated special theater for surgical HDU and ICU. There is also a technologically advanced catheterization laboratory and three laboratories with a dedicated electro-physiology function that allows for round-the-clock delivery of coronary interventional procedures. The non-invasive laboratory on the ground floor provides a comprehensive range of non-invasive tests for inpatients and outpatients.
Many patients transfer to Heart Hospital from nearby Hamad General Hospital’s Emergency Department if they require specialist cardiac care. In addition, referrals are made into the Heart Hospital from Primary Health Centers and other specialist areas with Hamad Medical Corporation. Heart Hospital has an emergency department to receive cardiac emergencies direct from the Ambulance Service. Due to use of a technology called ECG telemetry, Heart Hospital’s Emergency Department and consultant cardiologists are able to monitor cardiac patients while they are on their way in the ambulance and prepare appropriately for the patient’s arrival. It also enables rapid transfers to the hospital to be facilitated.
The hospital has its own radiology department delivering cardiac CT, cardiac isotope studies and a full range of diagnostic procedures. The pathology laboratory is shared between the Heart Hospital and the adjacent specialist cancer hospital, the National Center for Cancer Care and Research. There is also a cardiac rehabilitation center that helps patients recover their quality of life.
Heart Hospital also has dedicated nephrologists and a dialysis service.
Please note, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology are undertaken at Hamad General Hospital.
