The Physiotherapy Department at Al Khor Hospital evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients whose muscles, joints and/or nerves are not functioning correctly due to illness or injury. It is the only department that provides a comprehensive range of physiotherapy services for in- and outpatients of all ages in the Al Khor community in the Northern area and the Industrial Area in Ras Lafan.
Outpatients are treated at our physiotherapy center which has 12 beds and is located behind the Al Khor Health Center. We also offer inpatient care in Room 20 on the second floor of the hospital.
Our professional team of six members of staff is made up of a supervisor and five highly-qualified physiotherapists who cooperate with each other and with other hospital departments to meet patients’ needs. We treat more than 400 patients a month with the help of an extensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic resources at our disposal.
Therapeutic servicesPhysiotherapy has become an essential part of the rehabilitation process in patients suffering from accident or illness. We are qualified to help patients before and after surgical procedures such as heart-lung operations, joint replacements (e.g. knee or hip), and amputations or plastic surgery. Our work is also invaluable when a patient has suffered a head injury or to treat age-related disorders in children or the elderly. Restoring normal function and development is achieved with the help of evidence-based therapeutic procedures. These include:
- Electrotherapy
Uses electrical energy to maintain and increase the function of a specific body part, for example by stimulating and/or relaxing muscles; can also be used in pain management.
- Heat and Cold Therapy
In some injuries, the correct administration of heat or cold can help reduce pain, increase flexibility, control swelling and promote healing.
- Physical Therapy
Regular exercise is crucial to the healing process. Physical therapy exercises can include stretching and strengthening activities, but also exercises to improve balance and joint control, or to re-train specific muscle groups.
- Manual Therapy
A variety of hands-on techniques employed to treat tissues and joints; these can include massage therapy and joint manipulation.
- Lumbar Traction
A type of mechanical therapy in which the patient is placed on a special table and treated with the help of a system of weights and cables. The aim of these exercises is to take pressure off of the muscles and discs in the lower back, thus relieving pain and restoring mobility.
- Gait Training
Gait training helps patients learn how to walk again if they are disabled or have suffered an injury. If necessary, the physiotherapist also teaches a patient how to use assistive devices such as crutches.
