Residency Training Programs for Dental Graduates

Please be advised of the following important changes for our Dental Residency Programs with effect from the 2025-26 academic year:
- Applicants for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Residency Program are required to provide, in their application:

a result from the NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE), scheduled through the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). Information is available on their website: https://www.aaoms.org/education-research/dental-students/nbme-for-oms-applicants
- confirmation of valid Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification or registration for an ILS certification course

The OET Dentistry exam, including the Home Edition, is now a recognized option to fulfill the English language proficiency requirement for application to our Pediatric Dentistry and OMFS Residency Programs

The next intake for the OMFS Residency Program has been brought forward from 2026 to 2025. The next application cycle will open on 1 August 2024 for a July 2025 program start.
Our Programs
HMC sponsors two dental residency training programs:
- HMC-RCSI Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program
The HMC-RCSI Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program is a 3-year post-graduate, dental training program leading to award of a specialist qualification in pediatric dentistry, FFD (Paed Dent), delivered in affiliation with the RCSI.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program is a six-year program following the Arab Board curriculum with the program’s graduates eligible to sit for the Arab Board Specialty Certificate upon completion of training.
The intake for Pediatric Dentistry is held once every two years with selected trainees joining their programs the following 1 March, with the intake for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery being held annually, with selected trainees joining their programs the following 1 July.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be eligible to apply for our dental residency training programs, applicants must meet specific requirements.
- Graduated within the past six years, with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (or equivalent), from a recognized dental school. For the next intake (2025-26 academic year, opening for applications in Summer/Fall 2024), graduates of 2019 or more recent are eligible to apply. “Graduation date” refers to the date of completing final dental school exams.
- Have completed a one-year internship training program which consists of rotations in the following areas:
- Periodontics
- Orthodontics
- Endodontics
- Prosthodontics
- Pedodontics
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar.
- Have been in continuous clinical practice in the one-year period preceding application and with no practice gaps of one year or greater at any time since internship completion (without appropriate justification of extenuating circumstances).
- Passed the following required clinical examination(s):

Applicants who hold a valid Qatar Residency Permit may apply with a TOEFL iBT score of 80, IELTS score of 6.5, or average OET of 300 but if selected, will be required to raise their score to the above-mentioned level prior to the program start date.
7. Additional Program-Specific Requirements

Application Dates
Pediatric Dentistry: Applications accepted from 1 June 2024 to 31 August 2024, for a 1 March 2025 program start).
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Applications accepted from 1 August 2024 to 30 November 2024, for a 1 July 2025 program start).
Applicants shortlisted for selection to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program
may also be required to sit for one or more additional entrance exams, the details of which will be shared with those invited to the exam(s).
How to Apply
All applications must be submitted through our online application portal, SMApply.
- Register for a new account at https://hamad.smapply.ioor log in to your existing account. New account registration will only be available while the application intake period is open.
- a) For new users: complete the Eligibility Quiz, to determine eligibility to apply. Applicants who provide false information in the Eligibility Quiz, in order to bypass the system, may be disqualified from the application process.
b) For account holders who have previously applied online to our programs: under Account Settings, update your existing Eligibility Quiz, in order to view programs to which you may apply. Please note this should be done from a non-mobile device. Programs will only become visible and open for applications while the application intake period is open.
- Initiate the application. Take note of the unique application number, for future reference.
- Complete all parts of the application, including the application form and uploading of all required documents. The various sections of the application can be modified or corrected prior to submission; however, no further changes are permitted once submission is complete.
- Submit the completed application prior to the intake deadline. The system does not allow late submissions and will automatically close to submissions at 11:59 p.m. (Qatar time) on the day of the deadline. Incomplete applications or those not submitted prior to the deadline will not be considered for selection.
We strongly encourage all applicants to review Frequently Asked Questions and Appendix (A) “General Guidelines on Completing the Application” before completing their application.
Additional Information
Please take careful note of the following:
- TOEFL, IELTS and OET results must be valid at the time of application. The current validity of these exams is two years from the date of testing. Applicants with a score which is valid at the time of application but will expire prior to the program start date should contact our office by email, for early verification of your certificate.
- Applications must be fully complete prior to submission, including all required clinical and English language proficiency examination scores. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that exams are written in sufficient time that scores are available prior to the application deadline.
- All applications will be verified thoroughly for false information. Any discovered instances of plagiarism (e.g. copied Letters of Intent), false information, or manipulation of documents will result in disqualification and withdrawal of your application.
