Program Overview

The Cardiac surgery residency program at the heart Hospital is to provide structured training for residents in cardiac surgery whereby they become qualified and competent cardiac surgeons. This includes training residents on surgical and non-surgical clinical skills as well as professional and personality development that comply with medical education competency parameters.

Goals and Objectives

The aim of the program is:

  • To train residents to acquire solid medical knowledge combined with surgical skills and their application in daily practice
  • To provide a training experience balanced in outpatient and inpatient and comprehensive in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages of management.
  • To train a comprehensive resident, who is able to integrate the broad training in medical diseases and excellent surgical skills with patient and family wishes and needs, health care system requirement and societal and economic factors in order to deliver optimal, efficient and durable care.
  • To provide residents with training on interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health care professionals.
  • To train residents in all aspects of academic surgery that include clinical, research and education
  • To expose residents to advances in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • To enhance trainees’ interests in self and professional development

Clinical Training and Key Rotations

The surgical curriculum has been designed around four broad areas, which are common to all the surgical specialties:

  1. Syllabus - what trainees are expected to know, and be able to do, in the various stages of their training
  2. Teaching and learning - how the content is communicated and developed, including the methods by which trainees are supervised
  3. Assessment and feedback - how the attainment of outcomes is measured/judged with formative feedback to support learning
  4. Training systems and resources - how the educational program is organized, recorded and quality assured

In order to promote high quality and safe care of surgical patients, the curriculum specifies the parameters of knowledge, clinical skills, technical skills, professional behavior and leadership skills that are considered necessary to ensure patient safety throughout the training process and specifically at the end of training. The curriculum therefore provides the framework for surgeons to develop their skills and judgement and a commitment to lifelong learning in line with the service they provide.

The training programme is 7 years in total. In the first 2 years of the programme the resident rotates in general surgery specialties closely related to cardiothoracic surgery such as Vascular surgery, esophageal surgery, thoracic surgery as well as specialty like acute care, intensive care and cardiology.

In the last 5 years of the training programme the resident rotates between 4 consultants cardiac surgeons and will be exposed to variety of cardiac surgery cases as well one year’s rotation between thoracic surgery consultants.

Research highlights/programs

The unit have very robust research programme and it is part of the training and development of the residents as well as the faculty. For example, last years alone, we published more than 10 papers in international indexed journal and more than 7 oral presentation as well as poster presentation.

We have Sr Consultant supervising almost all the research projects in the department and could be a very good help in development of any idea from the residents as well as the faculties

Facilities and Resources

The department have 4 Sr Consultant and few consultants all of them engaged heavily in training and development of the residents.

There are resources in the unit as well as provided by the medical education to help in development of the residents and the faculties. For example, we do 4 courses every calendar year (Coronary anastomosis course, Minimal invasive cardiac course, Robotic courses, and Heart valve courses) some of these courses include wet lab.
