This full day course will introduce participants to the fundamental principles and practices of biological safety.
Completion of the course is mandatory for those working in the Interim Translational Research Institute (iTRI), presently or in the future, as well as those interested in laboratory research.
About the Instructor
Richard W. Gilpin, Ph.D., RBP, CBSP, SM(NRCM)-Emeritus
Richard Gilpin has published basic science and clinical research microbiology papers and currently specializes as a biosafety trainer and director of the 34‐year Control of Biohazards Course, originally given at Johns Hopkins University. He has been a medical school faculty member for 30 years and is a registered and certified biological safety professional. He also directs a legionella water testing laboratory based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Gilpin’s current consulting includes work with institutional biosafety committees and expert witness testimony on biosafety issues and legionella in the environment.
Richard is a 48‐year member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and an emeritus member of the National Registry of Certified Microbiologists. He is a 25‐year member of the American Biological Safety Association and has served on the ABSA Council. Richard is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air‐Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Association of Water Technologies (AWT) and the NSF International Biosafety Cabinetry Standard 49 Committee.
