Joanna Butler

Joanna has been a diabetes specialist nurse since 1986 and is now working at Hamad General Hospital. Joanna is from the UK, she trained and worked in London both in Primary and Secondary care. Her last post in the UK was as Consultant Nurse in Wandsworth, London where her role was to integrate primary and secondary care services. Joanna has a particular interest in diabetes education both for staff and patients. In the UK she set up education programs for nurses and supported community nurses to develop skills to enable people with diabetes to self-manage. Joanna led on the introduction of DESMOND a structured education program for people with type 2 diabetes which was delivered in the primary care setting.

Whist in Qatar Joanna has initiated a number of nurse education projects and has worked with the College of the North Atlantic Qatar to introduce a diabetes multidisciplinary education program for health care professionals. Joanna also led on the introduction of DESMOND to Qatar. This is the first time DESMOND has been delivered in the Gulf region. DESMOND is quality assured, all educators across the globe are trained in the same way and there is an assessment process. Our aim is for the educators delivering DESMOND to be accredited. Therefore Qatar will be recognised as a DESMOND center.

Joanna has presented both nationally and internationally, written books on diabetes and published articles, the most recent in 2015 on diabetes and stroke in Qatar.
